Dear Holy Comforter,

From our gospel reading for this upcoming Sunday:

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. - Matthew 10:5

Dear Holy Comforter,

Welcome to Ordinary Time! A season which will stretch from now until Advent. Thank you for such a joyful Trinity Sunday! We had a chance to confess our faith in the words of the Athanasian Creed and we heard an abridged meditation on how we encounter the Trinity in prayer from Mike Higton. You can read that again here

Dear Holy Comforter,

It feels strange to write about spiritual dryness in the midst of a long stretch of rainy days, but there it is.

We are five months into a new church plant, three days out from the Feast of Pentecost, and many of us are feeling dry and weary as we limp into the summer and ordinary time.

I read these words today from Johann Christoph Blumhardt (1805–1880), a Lutheran pastor, and they felt like something one of us could have written:

“In that first outpouring of the Spirit we had proof that God keeps his word. But now we need a new outpouring. We are dehydrated people; the thirst is almost killing us…

On Sunday, we’ll celebrate the Feast of Pentecost and remember how 50 days after Jesus’ Resurrection the Holy Spirit was poured out upon Jesus’ followers who were then scattered to be his witnesses to the end of the earth. Wear red as we pray for the Holy Spirit to renew and strengthen us and the whole Church, and stay afterward for cake as we celebrate the Church’s birthday together.

Dear Holy Comforter,

Thank you so much for such a beautiful Rogation Sunday, when we prayed for God’s blessing on the earth and our work. I so enjoyed blessing all the signs of our common work under our altar, which reminded me of this collect which we pray in our Compline service:

O God, your unfailing providence sustains the world we live in and the life we live. Watch over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant we may never forget that our common life depends on each other’s toil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dear Holy Comforter,

One of the most arresting moments of Palm Sunday is when we cry out, “Crucify him!” and acknowledge that we are not only the ones Jesus comes to save, but also, in our own ways, the ones who help drive the nails. We are both recipients of his mercy and participants in the world’s sin—caught up in patterns we cannot fully untangle, and desperately in need of God’s rescue.

Dear Holy Comforter,

When I was reflecting on the fourth step of the Examen—Sorrow for Sin—I was struck by this insight from Joseph Tetlow, a Jesuit priest who has been teaching and praying the Examen for decades:

“Never, never start examining yourself until you have thanked God for the gifts that God is giving to you—not in general, not in the past, but right now, today.”

Dear Holy Comforter,

I closed my sermon this past Sunday with a prayer for Recollection from Teresa of Avila.

Gracious Friend, give me the grace to recollect myself in the little heaven of my soul where You have established Your dwelling. There You let me find You, there I feel that You are closer to me than anywhere else, and there You prepare my soul quickly to enter into intimacy with You…

Experiencing Lent With Our Children

Dear Holy Comforter parents and families,

It was good to see many of you at our Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner and our Ash Wednesday service.

Lent has begun. This season is similar to Advent in that it’s a season of waiting and preparation, and both share the color purple in the liturgical calendar.

Dear Holy Comforter,

It was great to see so many of you Tuesday night at our Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner (Thank you to Elena and Tom Benning for helping us pull it off.) and last night at our Ash Wednesday service.

I encourage you to take a look at my letter from last week and Matt Wooldridge’s letter to CHC families which you can find here, to explore the ways we’ll be preparing for Easter together.

Dear Holy Comforter,

The Epiphany season comes to a close this Sunday with a reading about the transfiguration of Jesus. And that is appropriate because aside from his resurrection, there is no more significant display of Jesus’ glory than the transfiguration, when he shines bright as the sun and is identified as God’s Beloved Son. All of Epiphany has been building toward this revelation of who Jesus is.

Dear Holy Comforter,

It was such a joy to be back with you in person last Sunday for our kid-led Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. What a gift it was to see our children leading us in worship—reading scripture, offering prayers, joining the procession, serving communion. Their joy and confidence were a beautiful reminder that God is alive and at work among us.
